So, the big question: does anyone know where to obtain or purchase a service manual for this unit. I know Fosgate was consumed by Rockford some years ago. Their website seems to be pretty useless for service info on old products like this. ALso, according to some postings on line this unit was somewhat similar to the Outlaw 950 and the Sherborn PT 7000.http://thoseduelingpianos.com/userfiles/can-fit-pro-personal-trainer-manual.xml

(I have non working examples of both) However, when I have contacted Outlaw (they said they won't release service info but they will look at the unit for 75 bucks if I buy the appropriate shipping container for 20.) and Emotiva, (who bought Sherborn and tried to be very helpful but weren't able to locate the service manual). So, if anyone could help me out here I'd be most appreciative! -T. It may not display this or other websites correctly. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. So now I have it and am trying to figure out what to do with it. I am pretty new to the audio world (as you will see from my lack of understanding). I currently have a vintage Pioneer SA6800 receiver with a cheap Akai amp and a Debut Carbon turn table. I'd be okay using the Fosgate with my Carbon if it would be a pretty good upgrade over my vintage system. I am perfectly happy with my current set up though I do have plans to set up a Rasperry PI network audio player in the future. That said, I have recently turned my attention to the home theater aspects of my system. I started this weekend by making a home theater PC out of an old laptop. I installed Sick Beard and bought an NAS. If I could use this for my surround sound, it would be ideal. However, it does not have an HDMI input and my laptop only has an HDMI and a VGA output. I have the Y, pb and pr inputs (see what I mean about being a novice?) on the Fosgate but my understanding from some research is that the 5 rca to HDMI converters are a scam. Is that true or are there other options? Why is HDMI so important. If you plan to use your laptop as your main source, connect the HDMI directly to your TV and use a digital audio out (if it has it) to the Fosgate. Why is HDMI so important. If you plan to use your laptop as your main source, connect the HDMI directly to your TV and use a digital audio out (if it has it) to the Fosgate. Click to expand. Seems to work fine.

I bought it from my local audio guy and he is pretty good about selling quality gear and he gives a 60 days warranty. I obviously haven't played with it all, but I am fairly confident it works. He sort owed me anyways because he has a Sony Hap-z1es that I paid for in advance but it was stolen before I could pick it up (he obviously gave me a refund) so this was sort of his pay back. This is where I am totally going to show how much of a rookie I am. I am not 100% clear on what you are saying. So that I am clear, I should simply connect my laptop to the tv using my HDMI cable. Then run a cable from my digital out to the receiver. If I am understanding right, that is super easy and I feel silly for even asking the question. For some reason, I thought the receiver's audio needed to come directly from the source and not from the tv. Thanks for the help!I am not sure if this is possible but my initial thought is to use a Raspberry Pi to recognize the artist and song that is playing and search YouTube for the video and automatically play the songs music video on the small screen. I've heard about people hooking their security camera up to it too. Open to ideas though.I am not 100% clear on what you are saying. Thanks for the help. Click to expand. All of the newer digital surround modes like DTS MA and Dolby True HD are sent over HDMI. Since this Fosgate is relatively old, it will not have the current surround sound codecs to decode them, so it's a moot point. However, if you have a digital output on your laptop ( fiber or coax), then you could connect that to the Fosgate and would be able to decode standard DTS and DD. If you have a stereo output, the Fosgate can decode that to Dolby Pro-Logic II. For video, you could use the HDMI connection from the laptop to the TV for video only. With these older types of processors, you're limited to the technology of the day. Are you going to expand your source components or stick with the laptop. Was the user manual included.

It would help a lot with setup parameters. I am not at all familiar with the FAP, but I've owned Fosgates in the past. The last being the Citation 5.0. It had onscreen menus to step you through the various setups. It would be a good assumption that the FAP does this as well. You'd might have to make a connection from the FAP to the tv with either a composite cable (yellow) or component (red, green and blue) to display the onscreen menus. Probably much easier to see than that small screen on the unit.I am not sure if this is possible but my initial thought is to use a Raspberry Pi to recognize the artist and song that is playing and search YouTube for the video and automatically play the songs music video on the small screen. (with the jumpers) hopefully i'll get a chance to play with it soon. This will at least allow me to wax eloquent on the man if not the equipment.

The Pro Plus stuff from Fosgate Audionics (MK. I) was the first decent implementation of surround sound in the 90s, far outshining Dolby Pro Logic. Pro Logic, when implemented very, very well, was barely acceptable as an alternative to stereo sound on a soundtrack, and virtually never acceptable as music. Jim Fosgate developed Pro Plus (get it, Pro Logic Plus) independent of Dolby as he always does, working inside his head at home. Once he had the algorithms and topology laid out in his head, he set about building analog, tube based electronics to make a working product. In this case, it was destined to be a Fosgate Audionics product, not a Dolby product, so FA had to do the work to convert everything to a solid state product that could emulate what the tubes were doing. I can imagine Charles Wood, Jim Strickland, and others trying to get all this out of Jim Fosgate's head and into a working product. Egad! Anyway, the application worked quite well, but the product quality wasn't quite up to snuff. So I'm not surprised that Don's wasn't operational.:( However, it was the best available at the time; even Bryston paid attention. The market took a big step forward with Dolby Pro Logic. But, 24dB step and all, Pro Logic stank. The rear channels were mono, rolled off at 7k on top and 100 on the bottom. The center was too strong. The wave started with add on devices, again proving to be frustrating. The refrain, ?Are the rear speakers on?? Fosgate had a very interesting circuit called Pro Plus that it introduced in the early 90s. It was much superior to Pro Logic. It made surround sound interesting, at last. They were the best of their time but, could not be confused with Bryston. But anguish lingered on because Fosgate and the few other higher end folks trying to do something more interesting with surround, didn?t make their gear very well. The switching was noisy and poorly done. The mechanical integrity of the units was OK at best.

While it was the best the market had to offer, it wasn?t even close to nice two channel gear. Clearly our customers wanted surround sound, but in the quality of good 2-channel stuff. Fosgate developed 6-Axis when he worked for Harman International, and you'll find it incorporated in the HK Citation 5.0 among others. More info is here. Jim Fosgate is a fanatic about sound. He developed one of the first good-sounding surround-sound systems, the Fosgate Research TATE 101A, which ended up winning the Consumer Electronics Show Design and Engineering Award back in 1982. After Harman International bought Fosgate Research, Jim created their Citation 7.0, another design with great sonics. In 2003, Fosgate won a special Emmy Award for the Development of Surround Sound for Television. In all, he holds 25 audio patents. Fosgate is also a self-proclaimed tube freak. He did all of the development work for Pro Logic II with tubes, then took the design to Dolby Labs to re-create in solid-state. All in all, the Fosgate name is a powerful recommendation in audio. He's just such a fascinating guy: brilliant, energetic, creative, and optimistic. As I recall, and DO NOT rely on my recollection for this, the amplifier inputs were for use with an integrated stereo amp or receiver that did not have pre-outs. Even as I write it, that sounds wrong, but that's a pretty strong memory; yet the RCA ins make no sense in that context. Maybe there was a dongle of some sort. The front panel display is somewhat quirky. Again, interface design is not a strength here. But there's a shitload of customization possible between the front panel and your little screwdriver poking around the calibration screws in the back. A manual is a must. Having said all that, I doubt that this piece of equipment will do much more than present you with a piece of history and an out-dated means for getting surround sound out of two channels. If I had one around, I doubt I'd ever fire it up again.

It'd be too crude by today's standards. But that is a nice little piece of history you have there.:) A manual is a must.this is what intrigued me the most. I think that those jumpers are pre-out and input jacks for the internal amplifier. I guess that they are there so that you can use additional processing on the rear channel speakers. You could also use the jacks to use the built in amplifier as a power amp for some other processor, but it's not very powerful. Then I looked closer at the user's manual I'd downloaded from Fosgate's website. Hmmm. No Dolby Digital, no DTS—just Dolby Pro Logic. Of course, the FAP V1 is Jim Fosgate's signature expression of Dolby Pro Logic, and I guess that counts for something. But the more I thought about it, the more interesting a prospect the FAP V1 seemed.First, it's all analog—just what I'd want for the reproduction of multichannel SACD and DVD-Audio discs. Second, its configurable Matrix and Panorama modes, along with its Dolby Pro Logic II processing, can enhance two-channel sources to give a more exciting surround experience without filling the room with a wash of corrupting sound. Third, in terms of construction and design, the FAP V1 is a statement product from the inventor of Dolby Pro Logic. Finally, it's all tube, and while that won't attract everyone, it's certainly a curiosity in the multichannel market. After I'd unpacked it, I couldn't wait to put the tubes in their gold-plated sockets and see their images reflected in the mirror surface of the transformer housing. When I turned the unit on and dimmed the lights, it looked more like an illuminated portative organ than a piece of audio electronics. It's heavy as an organ, too.The rest of the rear panel is occupied by eight pairs of input jacks, one pair of two-channel tape outputs, and one set each of 7.1-channel inputs and outputs. While fascinating to watch, the LEDs' action never seemed closely correlated with what I was hearing.http://afhobiecat.com/images/brasilia-portofino-del-1-manual.pdf
